Reunited in Steamboat.

Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway. U.S. Route 191, Bridger-Teton National Forest, WY.

Bridger-Teton National Forest

After a good chat with Tyler and saying goodbye to the group, I made my way south on U.S. Route 191 to Pinedale, and eventually to Rock Springs. Tyler and Sloane made some great recommendations for a beautiful, enduro-type ride, but due to needing to make it to Steamboat, I stuck to the traditional highway route. Due to an eventual detour, this ride would end up being the longest of the trip at 472 miles. Probably a good thing I did not tack on an enduro ride. The ride from Jackson was gorgeous, featuring big sweepers through a mountain river valley. I hit some rain just outside Pinedale. Thereafter, I continued across the high mountain plain in southwest Wyoming, ending up in Rock Springs.

Blown away on I-80

The winds steadily increased around Rock Springs. I hit I-80 East toward Rawlins, eventually needing to pull over to take a detour. There were a bunch of rigs, RVs and motorcycles pulling over, as the high winds from the south were gusting close to 70 MPH. I headed south on WY-789 to Baggs, where I planned to follow the originally planned route east through Medicine Bow National Forest, then south via Steamboat Lake and into Steamboat Springs. The ride from Baggs east was beautiful – check out the HD video, especially the scene with the landslide detour. My plan to cut south to Steamboat Lake came to a halt, when I saw the posting that the road had not been cleared of snow and was closed. I doubled-back to Baggs, then caught WY-789 south into Colorado. There were some really striking land formations on the way to Craig.

In a hurry

I eventually reached US-40 in Craig, and had a great ride as the sun angle lowered. I stopped at the City Market grocery store to pick up some flowers for Kristen, who had flown in to join me in the drive back to the Twin Cities, then made my way up Burgess Creek and Ridge Road to the Double-R (see the HD video’s 7:18 mark).
